Setup Guide

Choose the right path to get Valtrics set up for your team — whether you're starting solo or onboarding an entire product organization.

Which Setup Path Is Right for You?

Before you start creating products and metrics, take a moment to choose the right approach:

Path A: Quick Solo Setup (15 minutes)

Best if you're exploring Valtrics by yourself and want to get a feel for the product.

  1. Follow the Quickstart Guide to create your first product, metric, and KPI tree
  2. Explore the features at your own pace
  3. Invite team members later when you're ready

Path B: Value Discovery Wizard (30 minutes)

Best if you want guided help identifying the right KPIs and metrics for your product.

  1. Navigate to Value Discovery in the sidebar
  2. The wizard walks you through identifying your product's key metrics and building a KPI tree
  3. Follow the Value Discovery guide for details

Path C: Team Onboarding (1 hour)

Best if you're setting up Valtrics for your team and want everything configured properly.

  1. Configure your workspace — Set up your organization profile
  2. Create your products — Add all products your team manages to the Portfolio
  3. Define your metrics — Set up metrics for each product
  4. Invite your team — Add team members with appropriate roles in Team settings
  5. Build KPI trees — Connect your metrics to business goals with KPI Trees

Path D: Bulk Import (30 minutes)

Best if you have existing product and metric data in spreadsheets.

  1. Download the CSV template from the Bulk Upload page
  2. Fill in your products and metrics
  3. Upload and review
  4. Then build KPI trees on top of the imported data

Organization Profile

Your organization profile sets the context for your entire workspace.

  1. Go to Settings in the sidebar
  2. Under Organization, update:
    • Organization name — Your company or team name

These details help team members identify the workspace.

Inviting Team Members

Valtrics is built for teams. Invite your colleagues so everyone has visibility into product performance.

  1. Go to Settings → Members
  2. Click Invite Member
  3. Enter their email address
  4. Select a role:
    • Admin — Can manage products, trees, metrics, and members
    • Member — Can view and edit products, trees, and metrics
    • Viewer — Read-only access
  5. Click Send Invitation

The invitee will receive an email with a link to join your organization. Invitations expire after 7 days.

Managing Existing Members

From the Members page, you can:

  • Change roles — Click the role badge next to a member's name
  • Remove members — Click the menu icon and select "Remove"
  • Resend invitations — For pending invites that haven't been accepted

Product Access

By default, all members can see all products in the organization. If you need to restrict access to specific products:

  1. Go to Settings → Members
  2. Click on a member
  3. Under Product Access, toggle which products they can view and edit

This is useful for larger organizations where different teams manage different products.

Regardless of which path you choose, here's the recommended order:

  1. Organization Settings — Name and profile
  2. Products — Add your products to the portfolio
  3. Metrics — Define the metrics you want to track
  4. KPI Trees — Connect metrics to business goals
  5. Team Members — Invite your team (if applicable)

Workspace Tips

Use Tags for Organization

Tags help you filter and group products. Common tag strategies:

  • By team: "Team Alpha", "Platform Team"
  • By type: "Customer-facing", "Internal", "API"
  • By priority: "Strategic", "Maintenance"

Start Small

You don't need to set up everything at once. Start with one product and one KPI tree. Expand as you and your team get comfortable with the workflow.

Keep Metrics Current

Set a regular cadence for updating metric values — weekly or monthly works well for most teams. Stale data reduces the value of your KPI trees and portfolio views.
