Quickstart: Your First 15 Minutes
Follow these steps to create your first product, define a metric, and build a KPI tree — the three core activities in Valtrics.
Prerequisites
- A Valtrics account (sign up at valtrics.io)
- Email address confirmed (check your inbox for the verification link)
Step 1: Create Your First Product
Products are the central entity in Valtrics. Everything else — metrics, KPI trees, and P&L — connects back to a product.
- Navigate to Portfolio in the sidebar
- Click Add Product
- Fill in the product details:
- Name: Enter your product name (e.g., "Mobile App")
- Description: A brief summary of what the product does
- Lifecycle Stage: Select the current stage (e.g., "Growth")
- Click Create
Your product now appears in the portfolio grid.
Step 2: Add Your First Metric
Metrics are how you measure product performance. They can be anything from "Monthly Active Users" to "Customer Satisfaction Score."
- Open the product you just created
- Navigate to the Metrics section
- Click Add Metric
- Fill in the metric details:
- Name: e.g., "Monthly Active Users"
- Unit: Select the appropriate unit (number, percentage, currency)
- Target: Set your goal value
- Actual: Enter the current value
- Time Period: Select the measurement period
- Click Save
Step 3: Build Your First KPI Tree
KPI trees visually connect high-level business goals to the metrics that measure them. This is where Valtrics shines.
- Navigate to KPI Trees in the sidebar
- Click Create KPI Tree
- Enter a name for your tree (e.g., "Mobile App Growth")
- Link it to the product you created in Step 1
- You'll see a canvas with a root node — start building:
- Click the root node, then Add Child
- Enter the child KPI name (e.g., "New User Acquisition")
- Continue adding children to break down your goal
A typical starter tree might look like:
Revenue Growth
├── New Customer Revenue
│ ├── Signups
│ └── Conversion Rate
└── Existing Customer Revenue
├── Retention Rate
└── Upsell Rate
- Attach metrics to leaf nodes by clicking a node and selecting Add Metric in the detail panel.
Step 4: Explore Your Portfolio
Go back to Portfolio to see your product in the grid view. Click on your product to see all its details — metrics, linked KPI trees, and lifecycle information.
As you add more products, the portfolio becomes a dashboard for your entire product organization.
